Easton does more with less, but can we sustain it?
Like any household budget, Easton cannot spend more than it makes. Increased costs are outpacing revenue.
PASE Committee - Promoting A Sustainable Easton
Formed after the May 2024 Town Meeting, this 19-member committee of town, school, and resident volunteers set out to understand Easton's financial state and seek solutions for its budget gap.
Things seem great here, what's the problem?
Easton has managed to balance the budget while making sacrifices, but next fiscal year brings a greater deficit, forcing Easton to make cuts that will negatively impact education and public service levels.
Why doesn't Easton have the funds?
- Easton relies heavily on tax revenue, but it's not enough to cover all costs
- Easton receives minimal state aid
- Two 4-year federal grants expire this year
Compared to most neighboring and similar towns, Easton has:
- Fewer police officers
- Fewer firefighters and medical emergency first-responders
- A leaner general town government
- Less funding for schools
- Less investments in community services and programs
